What we check before a payout leaves

Fatima BelloHead of Compliance6 min read

Every regulated payments business screens transactions. Few explain what that means in practice, which leaves customers guessing when a payment is held.

Here is what actually happens to a Syntra payout between you approving it and it leaving.

Sanctions and watchlists

The beneficiary name, the destination country, and the payment reference are checked against consolidated sanctions lists and our own internal lists.

Name matching is fuzzy by necessity, because names transliterate differently and lists contain aliases. Fuzzy matching produces false positives, and a false positive means a real customer's real payment waits for a human.

Why we tune for fewer false positives

A screening system set too loosely misses things and is a regulatory failure. Set too tightly, it holds so many legitimate payments that reviewers stop reading carefully, which is also how things get missed.

We measure our false positive rate and treat it as an operational metric, not a compliance one. Reviewers who see fewer, better alerts make better decisions on the ones that matter.

Pattern checks

Beyond lists, we look at whether a payment fits the account's established behaviour: a first payment to a new country, a sudden change in size, a beneficiary added minutes before a large transfer.

None of these are wrong on their own. Together with other signals they are worth a second look, usually a short conversation rather than a block.

What you can expect

The large majority of payouts clear screening without a human involved. Of those that are held, most are released within minutes and nearly all within the working day.

Where we are legally permitted to tell you why a payment is held, we do. Occasionally we are not permitted to, and in those cases we will say that we cannot comment rather than invent a different reason.
